In June 2017 Panevėžys University of Applied Sciences starts admission to new Road Engineering study programme. Aim of the programme – to prepare specialists able to organize and technically manage road construction and repair works, apply optimal and safe work implementation methods, design simple road and road construction projects, keep professional competence in life-long learning. In summer 2017 group of future road engineers specialists will be formed in part time studies.
„This study form especially favorable for working persons. Studies organized in sessions, part of the activities and consultations implemented at time suitable for students using virtual and distant learning systems, earlier studies results are recognized, competences and experience acquired during the work also recognized as a study results”, - informed Dean af the Feculty of Technological Sciences Birutė Dalmantienė.
Road engineering study programme prepared and implemented in cooperation with Lithuanian Road Administration under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (LRA), Panevėžys University of Applied Sciences and AB “Panevėžio keliai”.
“When state opens new history page in communication field in the next decade two very important for Lithuania and EU “Via Baltica” development and “Rail Baltica” construction projects will be implemented. No less aspiration are waiting developing country cities and suburbs communicational infrastructure. Especially lot of attention paid to state road building and repair quality. For all plans implementation not only good machinery is needed, but also human resources. Today lack of human resources in road engineering and building labor market is noticeable. It is predicted that in the future demand for qualified specialists in this area will increase. This is why LRA seeks cooperation with educational, science and business organizations to ensure highest road building standards, this can be done only by properly prepared specialists”, told LRA director Egidijus Skrodenis.
Road engineering study programme assigned to construction engineering study field, graduates will be awarded by professional bachelor qualification degree. Scope of the study programme – 180 credits (4800 hours). Full time studies duration – three years, part time, when studies can be harmonized with work – four years. More than one third studies rime is allocated for practical learning.
Students will learn general high education subjects: applied mathematics, foreign language, applied physics, informational technologies, applied research, basics of law and others. Study field disciplines – geodesy, geotechnics, building and road construction materials, engineering drawing and computer graphics, road design, road construction, road construction technologies, construction calculations, engineering road safety measures, organization of work, economics, rationing and estimates, applied mechanics, road maintenance and repair and others. Part of the study subjects students will choose according to their needs from University of Applied Sciences proposed optional subjects list.
In the study plan are planned contact work hours when students meets teacher in the classroom or communicates distantly and individual student’s study hours.
Students will perform six practices four of which will be implemented in the companies with activities related to road construction, repair and maintenance.
As Deand of the Faculty of Technological Sciences Birutė Dalmantienė states, for some students study scope may become lower – University of Applied Sciences is recognizing earlier study results as well as competences acquired in non-formal way. For example students having 12 months practical work in road construction company experience can apply for some practices results recognition. Recognized subjects have direct impact on studies price.
“We invite persons with the secondary education to choose road engineering studies in Panevėžys University of Applied Sciences. Significant funding for engineering study field studies is allocated annually, most of the future engineers study in state funded studies. Applicants should connect to general admission to high schools system www.lamabpo.lt and mark as a first priority Road engineering studies in the State funded place and only later choose self-funded studies”, - informed Dean Birutė Dalmantienė.
“We are ready to share innovations for young people to be able to realize their professional aspirations, acquire competences needed for labor market in the region. We will stimulate our employees to use possibilities of part-time studies, ensure conditions to harmonize studies and work:, - told AB “Panevėžio keliai” General Director Virmantas Puidokas.
AB “Panevėžio keliai” has created and adopted in production modern road building technologies, including digital construction and equipment control systems, company has transferred road construction to the next technological and technical level. Modern process organization methods are used for project management. For these systems management, development high qualification specialists with versatile knowledge are needed. Cooperation with Panevėžys University of Applied Sciences will allow young people to acquire competences needed for modern road construction, learn how to apply them during the practical activities. Good practice will be transferred by practice tutors –“Panevėžio keliai” staff.
Qualified road construction specialists until now were prepared by Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) and Kaunas Technical College. Panevėžys University of Applied Sciences is the third educational institution in the country preparing road engineers. Aspiring for more productive education and business cooperation Panevėžys University of Applied Sciences and Kaunas College this spring joined “Lietuvos keliai” (“Lithuanian Roads”) Association. VGTU is a long term member of this Association.
